Game: Down With The Filth – Prologue

Post Meta

Please respect that this is a game in progress, and that comments on this post will be deleted unless you are playing. If you would like to discuss the game then you may do so freely in the Darkest Heresy forums here. Thankyou.

This will be a departure from the regular storyline in which you will not be playing your usual characters. Instead of the acolytes you will be playing as a small group of elite Adeptus Arbites Arbitrators; The Gloom Reapers. They are an adept team, skilled at finding heretics and criminals seeking to flee Imperial justice. The criminals believe the light of the Imperial justice is dimmed by the depths of the deepest levels of the under hive. The Gloom Reapers prove them wrong.

Your mission will take you into those depths and through the realms of gangers, mutants and worse in pursuit of a wanted heretek. Trust in your weapon.  Trust in your squad. Above all, trust in the light of the Emperor!

You have two three pre created characters to choose from, and may decide between yourselves who plays which,  or otherwise roll a random choice. If more players wish to join I’ll add character sheets as needed.

The available character sheets are for Amael, Lino and Kempton. I’ll keep them up to date as we play, but it will probably be easier for yourselves if you have your own copy too.

Now, a few quick pointers on game comments since this is the first time we’ll be playing like this.

  • Use block quotes italics for anything in character or describing your characters actions. You can clarify your post in regular text.
  • If you need to do anything in secret you’re welcome to text/skype/call/email me to avoid everyone knowing. Anyone who’s playing should have at least one of those options available.
  • Same goes if you have questions about playing, though you’re welcome to through that in a comment.
  • Make it clear what you are rolling for. Who are you firing at, what with, whats the modifier for, etc. Be specific: No ‘firing at the ganger’ when there are 4 gangers in sight!
  • You will probably need to make several comments in a row sometimes. For example when attacking you will need to roll to hit, post your comment, and then roll for damage in another comment if you hit.
  • To make re-reading easier I may delete comments that don’t impact the game. Not sure on that yet, we’ll see how it goes.
  • To keep the game flowing try and check comments a few times a day. No issue if you can’t, but more interesting if we can keep up some pace I think ;)

All that said, I think it’s time I started the game! Here’s your opening:

You’ve been summoned to Justicar Hadds office for your days briefing. Rumour is this is another under hive run for the Gloom Reapers; The third this month. Your guess is it’s that heretek that rampaged through the Coscarla district a few months ago, and you should have your suspicions confirmed or denied soon enough.

As you arrive at Hadds office you nod at the adept behind the desk outside. He doesn’t even glance up from the scratchings of his auto quill as you stand to attention against the wall.

While you await the arrival of your fellow Gloom Reapers you consider your mornings inventory. If you are headed to the under hive you’ll want the latest activity and maintenance reports and, regardless of your task, you will need to book your weapon out of the armoury…

Take a moment to say hi, test commenting, ask questions and discuss characters/abilities/rules/etc before the we get in to the story proper.

Edit: Added a character sheet for Kempton up above, and updated the site to show Game Resources like character sheets to the right of the post.

Okay, so I think we may be ready to start the game, unless there are any objections. If you have any oustanding queries then try and get me on skype (email me if you don’t have my skype username). Also, I’m going to clear up the comments before this one since pretty much every issue seems to be sorted.

I believe Herrflik is playing Amael, LivingTarget is playing Kempton, and so R0adkill is playing Lino.

In character stuff in italics please, and lets see some nice roleplaying :P That said, lets get under way!

As the last of you arrives and takes his place, standing at attention against the wall, the adept stops his writing and looks up. “Jusitcar Hadd will see you now. Hurry up, he doesn’t have all morning!”

Might I suggest a tad of character stuff before we get all engaged with the characters and the game?  I was thinking that given that my character is by far the youngest here (21, to Stuart’s 29 and Andy’s venerable 34) my character could be the rookie of the squad?  Not exactly straight out of the acadamy but still very green at the whole working out in the underhive thing.  Just a thought.

Respectfuly nodding to the adept, Kempton turns his head to his other squad members.

“Lets go and see what the good Justicar has for us today then gentlmen!  I hope its a seek and destroy mission, the recon mission last time ended up being so dull. I havent had a proper chance to use my bolter on something that shoots back, i came second in my class for bolter and street fighting you know!”  (As if he hasnt mentioned it a thousand times before, in every operation the three have worked together)

Kempton starts to twiddle his precious little silver Aquila that he hangs so proudly from the lower right torso of his body armor, so prized as recognition of combat skills, and looks expectently at the more senior squad members.

“Dont worry rookie, something tells me we will get to bring the emperors justice to plenty of scum, and the more the merrier.., what say you Lino old man? looking forward to another trip into the depths?”

Amael spoke casting a suspicious eye over Kempton, his grip firm on his shock maul as if waiting for an excuse to use it

Little background for my character: Amael used to be a bit of a joker until the Corscala massacre, where his squad was blown to smithereens by a booby trap. He lost all of his friends but Lino who, despite only being 5 years older, is affectionately ribbed about his veteran status.

Amael can be heavy handed in his dispensing of the Emperors law but always plays by the book. Lately though he is consumed with the need to avenge his dead brethren in arms and his behaviour is reflecting this….

Lino looked over at Amael and replied “Of course Amael, I cant wait for another trip into the depths. You cant beat the smell down there”.

Lino checked his trusty shock maul. As it glinted in the light all the markings of a career which had lasted for longer that he sometimes wanted to remember could be seen.

Lino I would say is, though the veteran of the group, a quiet person and has seen many things in the depths that shouldn’t be spoken about. But with this in mind he makes an excellent member of the squad: the one you can rely on to get the job done by any means necessary….

Aaaand no one has made any move toward the Justicars office? He doesn’t like to wait you know! :P

On another note, I was planning on you not having your weapons yet (even if I did leave them on your character sheets… oops). No harm in having the ‘vet refuse to walk around unarmed though ;) I’ll say Amael and Lino still have to book their weapons out of the armoury though.

Now, who wants to get in and see the good Justicar?

Aaaaand introductions first James. cant start talking to each other in front of a Justicar, that borders on insubordination ;) . Sorry we like weapons but I just thought I would always have my maul on me oooops

Amael quicksteps into the Justicars office and stands to attention on the left near the desk

makes aquila symbol

‘Amael reporting for duty sir, whats the situation?’

Hehe… I was thinking more of the very lethal projectile weapons than the mauls. The mauls you’re welcome to carry around permanently! (Really, I just want to get you to the armoury for a couple of reasons)

Justicar Hadd looks up briefly from the papers he’s signing, evidently waiting for the other gloom reapers to present themselves before speaking. While he waits he pulls a data slate from the top of a haphazard pile and, thumbing the rune of activation, begins to scroll through its contents.

As you stand at attention your eyes are drawn to the near side of his desk, to the two weapons mounted there.

One is a silver inlaid combat shotgun, a standard Scintillan pattern like yours if not for the intricate decoration.

The other weapon is a blade, left un-sheathed. Most Justicars would have a power weapon as a sign of thier office, though rumour has it Hadds blade is even more valuable than that. Noting the lack of power field emitters you consider for the upteenth time that the rumours may indeed be true…

“Sir!”

Kempton approaches the Justicar’s desk, coming to attention with deafening precision whilst ripping of an inch-perfect salute; maintaining it as he waits to be ordered to Be At Ease. He commences a thousand-yard-stare at the wall behind the Justicar, he had learnt in the academy that meeting the gaze of superiors never ended well.

Going to move this forward a bit, so apologies to R0adkill for shifting his character for him. If you want anything changing, let me know and I’ll add it in.

Lino quicksteps into the office after Kempton, making the sign of the Aquila respectfully as he stands to attention.

After a moment the Justicar puts down the data slate he has been reading and stands up to begin your briefing.

“At ease, and throne dammit Kempton you’re a Gloom Reaper, salute like one!”

As he says this Hadd picks up the data slate he had been reading and throws it to Kempton.

“Thats the details on your new assignment. Recovery mission. You’ll be looking for a heretek known as the Churgeon.

She ran amok in the Coscarla district a couple of months back. We haven’t heard what happened exactly, and I’m not sure I care except for her escape. That, and an old friend needs her bringing in.

We’ve got an idea she may have taken up residence near the Stankpit… It’s a lower hive area, centre of which is a crevasse that most of the local chemical and waste spills flow in to. You can guess how it got it’s name yourself.

Local ‘residents’ have been kicking up a fuss… turf wars, killings and the like… and everything seems to be heading away from the Stankpit. Access to the area has been getting more and more patchy too.

Everything else we’ve got is on the slate. Now go check in with the Administratum office. If my memory isn’t rotten from all this paperwork there was a settlement down on the crevasse edge. The adepts should be able to tell you more.

Throne favour you gentlmen.”

A data slate, btw, is a basic e-book type device. Stores documents and provides a largish screen to read them back on.

And as an example of a skill test for R0adkill lets see Kempton try and catch that dataslate without fumbling :P

Routine agility test (rolling under your Ag+20) please, Living.

Well, you needed 48 or under (Agility of 28, +20 for routine test) so that’s a slight fail. Sorry matey!

Put off by the Justicars comment Kempton fumbles catching the data slate but narrowly avoids dropping it completely, only ruffling his uniform and ending up standing a little out of place.

  • Posted on April 26th, 2009 at 16:19:44
  • Written by James Grant

Fumbling and slightly embarrassed Kempton re-centres himself then replies.

“Yes sir, Sorry Sir”

Then then, as ordered, leaves the office with data slate in hand.  Once out of the antechamber and in the corridor he pauses, waiting for the other Gloom reapers.

Once the door is safely shut and out of ear shot Kempton, looking concerned, says

“What did I do this time?”

His tone is not insubordinate, more concerned.  There is a hint though that his is getting a little weary of being dressed down by the justicar, however, probably a result of his embaressment with the data slate.

Ahem, yes sorry about that, sheer tardiness on my part im afraid. Will try to keep up.

After saluting the Justicar Amael steps out the office looks at Kempton, smirks under his helmet.

‘Did that to me too first time out, completely fumbled it straight into my superiors synth-caf. Was polishing carapace for weeks after that one….’

After a brief  seemingly warm comment, Amael becomes his recently frosty self again.

‘Right now the fun part, come Rookie I cant wait for the old man all day’

Amael heads off in a quick march to the armoury itching to get his hands on some ‘peacekeeping’ equipment.

After saluting the Justicar Lino steps out the office and follows Kempton, and Amael.
Lino marches down the corridor towards the armoury, looking forward to picking up an example of the emperors finest judgement giver. well just a normal shotgun but it does the work.

Woo, we’re moving again!

Arriving at the armoury you find a bored looking quartermaster at her station behind the armour-glass screen. Behind her you see the armoured door to the weapons lock up, racks of guns and shelves of ammo visible in the gloom. Posters warning of armoury protocol and advising proper weapon maintenance adorn the walls in ordered fashion.

Looking up she asks for your cognomen and name, her voice crackling over the vox system as she slides open a small hatch in the screen in front of her.

I’m just checking over your character sheets to make sure they are correct equipment wise. Probably worth your time checking them, and maybe considering what your fellowship skill is like ;)

EDIT: Updated the character sheets (removed those shotguns/bolters you don’t have yet :P ) Also made some changes to the comments display for game posts… Might be a bit easier to follow the in-game/out-game flow now.

Oh, and for those that don’t know/remember, your cognomen is a form of ID. Never leave home without it!

  • Written by James Grant

Kempton approaches the desk and slides his cognomen to the hatch.
He then looks up and through the glass, half smiling at the quartermaster

“Reaper Kempton; requesting my Boltgun and ammunition. Hello Barrows, hows things?” he gives a slight pause
“Got another hive run tonight, they’re keeping us busy at the moment.”

His tone is slightly less formal than is his trade mark; the act in the Justicar’s office is not yet forgotten, which has taken the edge off of his normaly clean cut approach to other officers.

Lino walks through the door of the armoury, passing Amael on in the corridor. As he passes Amael he says “Come on Amael hurry up we need to get on with our job, stop dawdling.”

Lino walks up to the desk within the armoury, to find Kempton chatting up the quartermaster. Well it appears that he’s trying too hard.

Lino says “Come on Kempton, plenty of time to chat after the mission. Grab your things and lets get to the assembly area.”

  • Posted on May 21st, 2009 at 11:26:17
  • Written by R0adki11

Barrows looks up as Kempton starts speaking, but before she can respond Lino walks in.

At Linos brief comment she smiles as she answers Kemptons question. “Looks like things are the same as ever…”

Taking his cognomen she slides it in to an access point for the precinct assignment cogitator, calling up mission assignments and equipment allowances.

“Looks like you’ve got your standard Boltgun or Shotgun allowance for this one. You’re bringing someone in, so I can spare you a couple of webber shells for the shotgun too. Plus standard underhive kit… respirator, torch and the like…”

You hear the scratching of an autoquill as Barrows speaks, and as she finishes she passes over 3 forms listing your equipment allowance. Standard procedure says equipment must be signed for, including optional selections.

“So what are you taking?”

  • Posted on May 21st, 2009 at 19:00:38
  • Written by James Grant

Kempton suddenly feels a bit sheepish.  He had only pure intentions towards the quartermaster but Lino’s comments, loudly intoned across the armoury and coupled with Barrows’ smile, suddenly reminded him that Barrows was quite pretty actually and… oh throne no, you’re on the JOB Kempton, get a GRIP!

“*cough* er, erm, I think I’ll take my bolter, th-*cough* thanks Barrows”

Kempton stutters his way through this as he completes the form and signs it (on the second attempt).  He then slides the form back through the access point, flashes the Quartermaster a glimpse of a smile, then moves over to the wall where he stands at ease, studiously avoiding eye contact with his squad mates and trying to ignore the sensation that he is attracting knowing looks.

Barrows disappears off into the armoury stores, returning a moment later with a movable table. Upon it are Kemptons Bolter, a telescopic sight, 2 clips, a respirator, a lamp pack,  and 2 pairs of manacles.

Pausing to put Kemptons Cognomen on the table with the rest of the gear, she pushes the table in to a cylindrical chamber within the wall beside her counter. As she thumbs a rune next to the chamber it rotates, closing it on Barrows side, and opening it on yours.

“There’s your gear, Rookie. Bring it back safe.”

Barrows pauses for a moment before looking at Lino.

“You next, Lino? ‘Cos this form isn’t filling itself out.”

  • Posted on May 23rd, 2009 at 14:59:29
  • Written by James Grant

Kempton quick marches over to the table and retrieves his gear. From there he moves over to one side of armoury where he begins going over all his gear, checking for faults and generally getting prepared; as was drilled into his head as part of his training not so long ago.

Lino strolls over to the desk , and places his cognomen through the hatch.

“Reaper Lino; requesting to take out a shotgun and ammunition. Hows it going Barrows?”

“Hope all is well, we and the Reaper’s are off on another adventure,  i mean a hive run”

  • Posted on May 28th, 2009 at 11:28:39
  • Written by R0adki11

Barrows takes Linos cognomen and places it in the access point. Ignoring the first question she answers Lino without looking up.

“Yeah, Kempton said. You’re cleared for the shotgun, you just need to fill out the paperwork.”

With that she strolls off into the armoury, returning a few moments later with Linos gear. A combat shotgun, 2 boxes of 20 shells, 4 webber shells, a respirator, a lamp pack and 2 pairs of manacles sit on the table which she wheels into the rotating chamber.

She take Linos completed paperwork before activating the chamber, allowing Lino access to his gear.

Lino strolls over to the table picks up his gear and moves over to the other side of the armoury and places his gear on one of the tables in the armoury. He picks up the shot gun and starts purposely going over it with a keen eye to make sure its all working.

“Kempton best check and double check your kit, partcularly your weapon, we dont want any jams in a firefight”

  • Posted on May 31st, 2009 at 13:37:03
  • Written by R0adki11

After Lino and Kempton are done and checking thier weapons Amael strides up to the window.

“Emperor protects Barrows, and may he protect me with my standard armament please”

Amael knows Barrows well, in the sense that he is constantly down here training and requisitioning the entire armoury for ‘practice’.

Barrows looks up and, laughing, greets Amael.

“Standard armament? You know I can’t sign out the whole armoury to you… Give me your cognomen and let’s see what you’re authorized for.”

Amaels smiles at Barrows turning on what seems to be a relaxed position and questionable charm

“the whole armoury? who said anything about the whole armoury?, no you can keep the Repressor in its garage for now” Amael chuckles over a disturbingly fond memory “all I want is just a few rounds of executioners. You wouldnt want me to come back bloodied and bruised would you? I still owe you 14 thrones and a dinner at Stefanos from last weeks card game”

Actually it was 49 over… You only have charm as a basic skill, so you test at half the relevant stat! Good try though ;)

Barrows laugh fades as Amael reminds her of his debts.

“Yeah, you do still owe me, don’t you? In fact, I think you still had 6 thrones from the previous game… So maybe I don’t mind you coming back a bit bruised.”

Giving Amael a pointed look she continues…

“Hand over your cognomen and lets get your gear booked out.”

  • Posted on June 1st, 2009 at 14:08:49

damn forgot about that lol

Amael hands over his cognomen “Six thrones be damned! need I remind you I paid you back by buying your drinks all night at the lucky shot, and the walk home would have been faster if we hadn’t had to carry you back to the barracks.”

The Lucky Shot is a tavern frequented by law enforcers on their days off, not a place you would want to visit hawking dodgy goods. Ask ‘no legs’ Linthos, and guess how he got his name.

Amael stiffens up. “Anyway, we shall discuss this another time. It would be good to have you back out there Barrows, throne knows we could do with every Arbite out there hunting this bastard down.”

I’m going with the fact that gossip would keep vengeance burning bright for the massacre of some Arbites. If not I’m sure Amaels state of mind is noted among his fellows.

Hmmm… Not good enough to get you something for nothing, but…

Barrows winces at the memory of those nights as she pulls up Amaels equipment authorisation.

“You wanted your shotgun, right?”

Leaving Amael with the paperwork to sign, Barrows heads back in to the armoury. She returns with the familiar cart load of equipment, putting it through the rotating chamber so that Amael can claim it.

Upon the table are a combat shotgun, 2 boxes of 20 shells, 2 webber shells, 2 executioner shells, a respirator, a lamp pack and 2 pairs of manacles.

Rules wise the executioner shells lose the scatter quality and gain no bonus for aiming, but always count as having being fired at point blank (+30 to hit) regardless of range.

Amael crosses the tees and dots the lower case jays (bonus points for people who get the reference without looking it up). Picks up his equipment and lovingly cradles his shotgun on his shoulder. Clearly this is a well maintained and cherished weapon its only blemishes being three etchings in the casing left of the aquila.

“thanks Barrows, when Im done giving a guided tour of down below Ill pick you up for your well earned meal”

Amael then turns round to his squadmates “Well Im sorted now gentlemen, awaiting your orders Old friend”

He salutes Lino respectfully

Lino Salutes Amael.

“Right Gloom Reapers lets get this show on the road, im heading to Administratum to find out our options of entering the hive, meet me there once you both have finished sorting out your gear”

Stern-faced, Kempton gathers his already checked and double checked gear, mounting it upon his carapace, pulling the strap of his bolter over his head or tucking the gear away into pouches upon his belt as appropriate.

This task done he marches off to the Administratum double quick time, without acnowledging either of his squadmates; he can’t help but think that the sooner he gets to shoot somebody or somthing, the better.

I’ll assume Amael went to the Administratum with everyone else.

You walk through the doors of the Administratum offices, a few of the several dozen adepts looking up at the echoing footfalls within the usualy silent room. After a moment the heads of the adepts duck back down to work, all except one who beckons you over.

As you approach he continues to stare at you, blinking myopically.

“Reaper unit, yes? Good, the insignia is correct. You match the records. Sign here.”

He thrusts a book and quill at no one in particular, obviously expecting a signature next to the most recent scrawled entry. Without missing a beat he continues rattling of a machine gun fire of words.

“Service Lift D09-B13-8712. Only one functional with known access to block 1087-U-314. The Stankpit? yes? That is where you are going? Good. It’s under maintainance, but functions. Proceed West from the service lift, the path is obvious that way according to the records. You have all you need, now sign and begone. I have records to update!”

Amael was indeed following like a sheep lol

Amael takes a look at the recent entries.

  • Posted on June 15th, 2009 at 16:23:20
  • Written by Herr Flik

Looking at the incredibly detailed records you spot one pertaining to a mission from several weeks ago. Of note is the fact that this record is the only one that does not have a return date entered. Looking that particular entry over you notice that one of the listed ‘relevant documents’ includes the maintenance log for service lift D09-B13-8712.

  • Posted on June 15th, 2009 at 21:54:50
  • Written by James Grant

Kemption glances over Amael’s shoulder at the records

Noticing the maintenance log and that the relevant entry for the team that had used it is missing, he jabs his finger at the reference; perhaps more forcefully and roughly than might be the case normally as he catches Amael’s shoulder as he reaches around.

“Why is their no entry for the team that used service lift D09-B13-8712?  They are required to log back in once they return from missions into the underhive!”

After a seconds breath he continues

“While you’re about it grab us the maintenance log for service lift D09-B13-8712; I want to make sure that thing is operating properly, I have no intention of dying on a faulty lift!”

  • Posted on June 16th, 2009 at 13:33:04
  • Written by LivingTarget

The adept glares at kempton from beneath the hood of his robes, beady eyes calculating in their regard.

“From the Appendix Documentatus Regulatus: Adeptus Arbites Volume 126. Section 1398, subsection XXIV, paragraph 2: ‘The final signiture for completion of a mission record shall only be obtained once all personages participating in said mission have been accounted for by formal presence of person or statement of an official witness in good repute before the Emperors sight.’ Clearly if they have not been signed for, they have not returned!”

In light of this obvious fact the adpet pauses a moment to finish his glare. Once done he turns his attention to his workspace and starts rooting through drawers…

“Regarding your request for a maintenance log, you are required to fill in forms ORI187-A93 and ORI113-A93 in triplicate. But only the sections in regal blue, but not the regal blue sections outlined in mechrite red unless the outline is dashed. You will also need a document of right to request, which I can authorise if you return me form ORA112-A01, again in triplicate. I am only able to authorise one more request until days end for security purposes though.”

As he talks he passes over the forms (3 of each), along with a quill.

Completing the forms will require a challenging (+0) Literacy (Int) test for whoever fill them in. I should probably note that you can assist each other, reducing the difficulty by one step for each person assisting (so you would gain +20 with all of you working together – 1 person making the test, +10 for each of 2 people assisting).

If you choose to assist each other, then say so and the person with the highest skill should roll (in this case Amael I believe, with an Int of 37).

The adept takes the completed forms, looking them over appraisingly.

“Is one of you a former adept? Hmm? You even followed the directions in the small print!”

Pausing a moment to reverently stamp the documents as authorised and record their entry, he then feeds the forms in to a small brass document destroyer beside his desk. As you begin to smell the pungent tang of burnt vellum the adept turns back to you…

“Wait here, and I shall fetch the maintenance report you requested.”

With that the adept scuttles off down the dim rows of work stations, finally disappearing from sight through one of the many archive doors.

I’ll have the report posted for you soon as I can (later today I expect).

The adept returns some time later clutching a sheaf of papers. Arriving back at his workstation, where you have been waiting, he appends a note to records before turning to face you.

“Here is the relevant maintenance log. Return it in good order within one week. No later. There are penalties for late returns!”

His piece said he hands over the record.

Maintenance report is uploaded, and can be found in the list of Game Resources at the top of the page.
